I picked this book up at the local library and was excited to read it until I got to the 1st page on the writers preface where the writer stated that he did not believe in God. Since this writer does not believe there is a God, then I do not want to waste any time reading anything he has to say.

I read this book a long time ago. If you like historical fiction, you may well enjoy this book. As a history buff, especially of the Middle Ages, this book offers a great background with Henry II and the martyr, Thomas Becket. The book focuses on a couple of primary characters and their relationships, how their lives were affected by various concerns and what brought them together. In effect, it’s a look at the upper and lower classes of society in medieval England around 1100 AD. The connection for them all being faith/religion and the building of a cathedral.
The downside of this book is the sexuality in the book. There are several very explicit sex scenes in the book and at least one graphic rape scene. Is there really any need for this other then titillation? If the passages in question were posted online they could well be considered porn. I have never picked up another Follet book.
I have read quite a bit of historical fiction, filled with suspense and drama, and I have read quite a few that are well written and enjoyable, all of which are not sexually explicit and/or treat intimate scenes with a bit more respect and modesty. Detailed, sexually intimate scenes are not necessary to promote, progress or further develop a story-line.
Then again, perhaps Oprah’s loyal fans of women will read this to sate their desires and supress their guilt by rationalizing it at the same time.

Please don’t waste your time like I did. This is a very stupid book.

I never received the book. I e=mailed the sender but she never responded. I want my money back, and if this is the way Amazon operates, I won’t be ordering any more books from them. Susie Johnson
