PLEASE HELP!!! Nikon D40 question?

I just bought a Nikon D40 with a few accesories but I want to know if I have everything I need to give the camera it’s best protection and performance. Heres what I have.

~Nikon D40 Kit, with Camera and AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor 18-55 mm lens
~AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor 55-200 mm lens
~Digital SLR Camera System Case with Nikon school dvd
~Sandisk Extreme III SDHC 4 gb card. includes MicroMate reader (what is that? it plugs into the usb port)
~Platinum Plus Ultraviolet Lens Filter

IS there anything else I need to get to ensure the D40 functions properly? Is it weather protected? Do I need to use that Sandisk card or does the D40 already have a card? Any advice on what else I might need to get would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Well, you’ve got a camera body, a wide angle zoom lens, a telephoto zoom lens, a memory card, card reader, and UV filter.

The camera probably has some memory but will benefit from having a memory card. Usually they don’t include this with the camera so you have to buy one. They’re cheap enough these days. And 4 gigs should be plenty.

The card reader is to transfer pics from the card to the computer.

The Ultraviolet Filter gives you pictures that are a little crisper in sunlight by filtering out UV rays that affect the exposure but are invisible to the eye. But the -real- purpose of it is to protect the lens from fingerprints, dust, etc.

It sounds like a very nice setup. As you go along you might decide you need other stuff, like a tripod, different lenses, a nice printer, etc. But you can take some really nice pictures with the camera as it is.

  2. You have everything you need, but for taking a class (in school) to learn how to compose and expose perfect images. Why school? For the interaction between other students and your instructor and the critique of each assignment and seeing how others interpret the same assignment.

Much, much later, you may want to buy an external flash like the SB600.

  3. The D40 DOES NOT have memory in it. You’ll need to put that card into your camera in order to save your pictures. The MicroMate reader allows you to transfer the pictures to your camera without involving the camera.

You should note that your camera is NOT weatherproof. You might be ok with it in misty conditions if you put it somewhere very dry to dry out afterwards. However, if you want proper weatherproofing you need to spend a few thousand dollars on pro cameras.

  4. You have a good kit there.

MicroMate reader included with your card is a card reader which is very helpful. It connects your card directly to the computer. The reader included here is slightly different than the usual card readers in that it also read SDHC (High capacity cards). Yours is a SDHC and so it can’t be read on a normal SD card reader and so this included card reader helps.

D40 is a good camera but not weather protected. You’ll have to take care in extremely dusty conditions and with rains/snow.

Yes, you need to use the Sandisk card.

Another thing that you might consider getting is a blower (like the one that comes in blower-brush) and a sensor cleaning kit.
