  1. After much reading and then purchasing a Kindle 2 (I stepped on my Kindle 1), I decided the cover looked dangerous to the Kindle’s health. And in true, bad product representation, Amazon decided that anyone who damaged their Kindle with the poorly designed, cheaply made, “plugs into plastic and metal” prong, which ultimately breaks the plastic part, destroying the Kindle 2, is an idiot that deserves to own a broken Kindle 2. Loving to read, and hating to get into that boat with those poor folks who depended upon Amazon’s quality to be superb, I looked elsewhere for the cover. I looked elsewhere for a reader too, but could not leave.

This cover is superb! It alone, makes the new Kindle 2 better than the old one. Beauty, function, quality, feel, freedom, and a cover that makes the Kindle 2 look like hundreds of dollars, instead of dozens of dollars. Kindle should have made this cover, and even though they didn’t, they should drop selling the suicidal cover with the fangs of death and sell ONLY this cover! It’s only minus is that it is a bit heavy. This is only because of the wondrous quality that it has in aces. This is a Mercedes, and as such cannot weigh in like a Honda. It is not too heavy, but it does have feel. Do not let this small thing dissuade you. It is terrific, and I just wanted to be honest about the only small side note that it does carry. Unlike the Amazon cover, this one actually protects the Kindle 2, which is far preferred opposed to destroying the Kindle 2 and needing no help in doing so.

My wife has a flashy Red leather cover, and mine is this more utilitarian brown. Both are as near perfect as life offers in this day of shoddy quality, cheap feel, and not doing all that it could do. You will not be disappointed.

  2. We own three of the M-Edge Platform jackets; two in the mocha/saddle color with a pebbled finish, one in the purple color with a pebbled finish. The colors were as expected from the photos on Amazon as well as the M-Edge site [...]. The exterior leather is of good quality and the stitching is neat and even. The inside of the cover is finished in a felted fabric and herein lies my first minor complaint.

Amazon’s description of the interior is not actually misleading when it states “plush grey interior”. The M-Edge site more accurately describes the interior finish as: “soft, grey microfiber”. The strip to the left of the Kindle (where the light inserts) is finished in leather. I usually hold the cover in my left hand so this is where my thumb usually resides. This area can be cleaned but I expect the rest of the fabric surfaces to become soiled over time by the oil in my hands. Since the microfiber fabric is not as durable as suede leather would have been, cleaning it will probably result in damage to the fabric. A genuine suede leather interior would have been a much better choice although more costly and bulky to manufacture. The microfiber interior finish is not a deal killer to me.

Amazon’s photos of the Platform covers when I bought ours in November 2009 showed views with the cover used as an “easel” on a tabletop and also with the covers doubled back against each other and the strap inserted in the pocket. As an easel I have no complaints. However, I rarely use my Kindle in this way. In the second configuration (the way I use the Kindle 99% of the time), the covers do not lie completely flat against each other. This is due in part to the stiffness of the still-new hinge area and the strap and also to the fact that the pocket is not quite deep enough to fully insert the strap. This means the covers have a gap between them and results in a rather thick and bulky package (which is accurately shown in the pictures, I might add). As the strap and hinge area age and limber up, the flaps may eventually lie flat, we’ll see. If you leave the strap out of the pocket, the covers lie flat but you now have a “tail” hanging down into your lap.

The overall size and weight of the Kindle “package” seems a bit bulky at first. The Kindle by itself is quite “svelte” but is vulnerable and slippery. Using some sort of cover seems almost a necessity. We had planned to use the M Edge Illuminator all along so the additional width (as is clearly shown in the pictures) was not a surprise. I suppose the package is bulkier than a paperback with the cover folded back, but is much less bulky than the average hardback novel with the covers open. It’s really a matter of what you are used to. Most of us have used books all our lives whereas the E-reader is new to us and requires a little getting used to.

Overall I’m quite satisfied with the purchase. Here are my condensed thoughts on the Platform cover for the Kindle 2:

    Pros:

Prompt delivery of the correct item with excellent packaging and return policy

    Quality exterior materials

    Accurate color description and appearance

Good workmanship (which is becoming pretty rare these days)

Provides very good protection for an otherwise vulnerable and slippery E-reader

Performs as advertised as a tabletop “easel” for the Kindle 2

    Cons:

The interior material is rather cheap looking and will be easily soiled since this is the surface in contact with your hands most of the time.

The closure strap is rather stiff and bothersome when the covers are doubled back.

The cover increases the size and weight of the Kindle “package” significantly.

  3. This has been a wonderful cover. My husband loves it. It fits well, is easy to use, does not hinder using the kindle, is easy to hold with the flap back while reading, closes easily and stays shut.
